Tanzania

The Brothers of Mercy of Joannes De Deo were commissioned to set up a good healthcare system in Sengerema, together with our sisters. The first settlement in Tanzania was in the Geita district, which belonged to the diocese of Mwanza. This diocese was split in two in 1990. Since then, Sengerema has been part of the diocese of Geita.

In 1967, CB Tanzania became a Region under the leadership of a regional administration.

Since 1990, Tanzanian candidates have also been admitted. At that time, they received their formation in the Philippine Region. In 1994, the formation house in Kia was built. This served as a postulancy and novitiate until 1999. In 2002, the novitiate moved to Tengeru-Arusha.

Sengerema community, Diocese of Geita

Our sisters in the Diocese of Geita have been involved in healthcare at Sengerema Hospital since 1959. Training for nurses and midwives began in 1963, followed by training for medical assistants in 1971. These courses have now been merged under the name “Sengerema Training Institute of Health”.

The sisters work as nurses, doctors and administrators, among other things, and are also involved in pastoral care for the sick and the hospital's outreach programme. The institute is now run by the Diocese of Geita.

In the same diocese, the sisters also work with lay partners in the field of education, such as the nursery school (since 1978), St. Caroli Primary School (since 1994), St. Caroli Secondary School (since 2001) and, since 1979, training to become a nursery school teacher. In addition, the sisters carry out numerous other activities (care for disabled children, HIV patients, dormitories and parish tasks).
