SPIRITUALITY

Our call to religious life is “deeply rooted” in and a “fuller expression” of baptismal consecration through the profession of the counsels (Perfectae Caritatis, # 5). As CB sisters, we try to live and work in accordance with the spirit of the Gospel in the Spirit of Mother Elisabeth (cf. Const. 6).

Throughout our nearly 185 years of existence, our spirituality has broadened and developed.

CB sisters work in many areas: retreat houses, hospitals, schools, pastoral work, setting up small Christian communities, religious associations for justice and peace, especially among the poor, the suffering and those living on the margins of society.

  • Charisma: the boundless, compassionate love of Christ, the Crucified One

  • Vision: the poor, people on the margins, people who suffer, redeemed and liberated in the wholeness of God's Kingdom

  • Mission: conscious of our life of dedication to God through our vows, in accordance with our Constitution

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, animated by the charisma of Elisabeth Gruyters and in fidelity to the Church, we, the Sisters of Charity of St. Charles Borromeo, commit ourselves to:

  • a contemplative and reflective attitude towards life, based on a deep union with Christ;

  • being a “servant of Yahweh” throughout our lives;

  • helping people to become whole, more and more like God, and as a sign of God's Kingdom, to respond to the challenges of our time with joy and simplicity, giving preference to those who are wronged.

Mother Elizabeth's charisma inspires us to live and work in a meaningful way. However, this is never an end in itself. Continued study and reflection on the spirit of the Congregation remains our primary task, so that it remains relevant for both our generation and those that follow us. Together, we must make our spirituality our vocation, one that inspires, gives strength and energy, and motivates our lives and those of others we encounter. Only in this way can our activities be sustained and our spirituality deepened and passed on.
